I couldn't do it. I couldn't. I reported for jury duty this morning, at the criminal courts building in downtown LA. I intended to just suck it up and take the day, and be done for the next 12 months. After all, I'm not likely to get on a jury even if I end up on a panel. But I have court appearances all this week, and I really need to bill.
So I postponed it to the week of Dec 15. And the fabulous news is that I only have to call in the one day. If they don't need me, that's it, I'm done.
Part of me really wants to be a on a jury, watching other attorneys in trial is exponentially useful for me. But then the thought of all those hours I'll have to make up, added to all those hours I have to make up for being gone for 10 days in October, made me sick to my stomach.
I am consoled by the fact that I work in the public sector (kind of - private firm, government work, but definitely government pay!) and my job is a civic duty. Doesn't get me out of it, but at least I don't feel like a heel for postponing.
We parked in the Disney Concert Hall (which is a 5 block walk from the courthouse, by the way), which was designed by Frank Gehry, (the link will take you to photographs of his buildings) and while I was out there I took some shots of it. Here's the main entrance. If you click on the photo, you'll be redirected to my Flickr stream and you can see some more pictures of it.
